The Perfect Halloween Ghost Story
This month I selected for my free ebook Daughters of the Lake by Wendy Webb. Webb is a bestselling author of suspense novels described as “The Queen of Northern Gothic” by reviewers.
It has rained here almost non-stop for days. Leaves are beginning to turn. I’ve got the pumpkin decorations out. And when it came time to choose my free Amazon First Reads title, I was in the mood for something spooky and suspenseful.
Webb did not disappoint in Daughters of the Lake.
The Plot of this Story
From the Amazon description:
After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents’ home on Lake Superior to pull herself together—only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman’s curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She’s seen her before. In her dreams…
One hundred years ago, a love story ended in tragedy, its mysteries left unsolved. It’s time for the lake to give up its secrets. As each mystery unravels, it pulls Kate deeper into the eddy of a haunting folktale that has been handed down in whispers over generations. Now, it’s Kate’s turn to listen.
As the drowned woman reaches out from the grave, Kate reaches back. They must come together, if only in dreams, to right the sinister wrongs of the past.
This Ghost Story Has Everything
This is one of those books that is hard to put down. I stayed up late reading it until I had to force myself to shut it down and go to bed because I was nodding off.
Daughters of the Lake has all the elements of a good, traditional ghost story. It has a murder mystery, a woman experiencing dreams, a link to past family members, ancient legends about Lake Superior, an old house that is haunted, even an old portrait that comes alive and says, “Get out! Get out of my house!”
Webb does a beautiful job of weaving these traditional haunted house and ghost story elements into a modern suspense novel. Daughters of the Lake is at once suspenseful, engaging, melancholy, and tender. There is a horrible murder, incredible sadness, deep loss, love, and forgiveness.
I like the idea that if our ancestors were able to reach out to us from the other side, they would love us because we’re family.
Enjoy a Good Ghost Story Tonight!
Daughters of the Lake is a good, clean, suspense novel. The description of the murder is not graphic or gruesome. The love story is sweet. The family connections are poignant.
Curl up in your favorite chair with a pumpkin spice coffee and a soft, warm blanket and enjoy Daughters of the Lake tonight.
I think I’ll go make some caramel corn now. 🙂 Stay tuned!
