Diverticulitis is the inflammation of the diverticula of the colon. Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can form in the digestive system and become painful when inflamed or infected. Golden Milk is a delicious, nutrition-packed hot drink that helps soothe the symptoms of diverticulitis. It’s gaining in popularity in the United States as people learn more about the healing properties of its main ingredient turmeric.
Usually, a change in diet is sufficient to reduce diverticulitis symptoms. Severe cases, though, may require an antibiotic or even surgery. The Mayo Clinic has a good webpage about diverticulitis, symptoms, and treatment. See a doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms.
Most often, though, diverticulitis is just a nuisance.

Being a natural remedy enthusiast, I did my homework when learning I have a mild case. The herb turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking Golden Milk is a great way to soothe the discomfort of diverticulitis and avail yourself of turmeric’s many other health benefits as well.
And I finally found a recipe that I enjoy rather than just tolerate. 🙂
The Health Benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric is a bright, golden herb native to India. It is a relative of ginger. The powder is made from the rhizome of the turmeric plant and is the base ingredient for curry. If you’ve enjoyed Indian food or a curry dish, you’ve most likely eaten turmeric.
It gives mustard it’s bright yellow color and is an ingredient in some pickle and relish recipes.
Turmeric possesses a wide range of proven health benefits due to the presence of curcumin in this herb. Curcumin is a proven potent anti-inflammatory agent. It also increases metabolism, helps heal wounds, treat acne, detoxify the liver, helps cognitive function, and treat depression.
The website Turmeric for Health says it is safe, however, to take turmeric with arthritis medications. This website is a great resource for more information about the benefits of turmeric. Talk to your doctor about any concerns about turmeric interacting with your medications.
Black Pepper Enhances the Bioavailability of Turmeric
According to Tumeric for Health, curcumin is difficult for our bodies to absorb. Piperine, a compound found in black pepper, by inhibiting certain digestive enzymes, make it easier for our bodies to absorb curcumin. So, black pepper and turmeric complement each other as a natural remedy. Good thing they taste good together!
Tumeric and Black Pepper Together May Fight Breast Cancer
Dietary polyphenols like piperine and curcumin have been studied for their effect on prevention of breast cancer. Mammosphere formation, which is a marker of breast stem cells were studied.
Early progenitor cells, normal stem cells, and healthy breast epithelial cells were examined after control, piperine and curcumin treatment were administered.
Turmeric and black pepper compounds both inhibited mammosphere formation. They also did not cause any toxicity, therefore showing that they could be possible cancer preventive agents.
Current breast cancer treatments are often ineffective and very often even after chemotherapy and other treatment, the cancer cells reappear. According to new studies, this could be because cancer stem cells still remain and could cause tumors to recur after a period.
Hence, new research is trying to find possible ways to target stem cells. Studies have found that turmeric and black pepper combined could target breast stem cells.
In a University of Michigan study, cancer cells were injected with a potent solution of piperine and curcumin that was at least 20 times stronger than what is normally consumed through food.
Breast stem cell markers were studied. The self-renewal process of breast stem cells that is the hallmark of initiating cancer was interrupted.
This is considered a significant development. Further, both compounds did not affect normal breast tissue. Sometimes women who are susceptible to breast cancer may be advised to take medications like tamoxifen. However, these can be toxic.
Natural compounds, which offer similar benefits and are non-toxic, could be a safe alternative therapy. Another benefit is that piperine and curcumin target self-renewal of all stem cells and not just those that are estrogen sensitive like tamoxifen.
This theory offers hope to all women who develop breast cancer not just the estrogen-driven kind.
Now that’s good news!! All the more reason to add Golden Milk to your diet.
Golden Milk: Hot, Soothing, Delicious, and Oh So Healthy!
When researching natural anti-inflammation remedies, recipes for Golden Milk come up in searches along with turmeric. I prefer a soothing drink made with turmeric rather than taking a capsule of turmeric powder. After trying several recipes (and dumping a few out!), I’m happy to share with you this recipe for Golden Milk from Minimalist Baker.
The only addition I made to this recipe is a pinch of salt and a little cardamom. I just think cardamom adds that little extra sweet spice that makes this recipe a little extra good.Print
5-Minute Vegan Golden Milk
A soothing, super-healthy hot drink made with turmeric. Helps with diverticulitis symptoms.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: about 3 cups
- Category: Beverage
- Cuisine: Vegan
1 1/2 cups light canned coconut milk
1 1/2 cups unsweetened plain almond milk
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 whole cinnamon stick
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
Pinch of black pepper
Pinch of salt
Sweetener of choice (I love about 1 tablespoon of real maple syrup. You can also use stevia or coconut sugar)
To a small saucepan, add coconut milk, almond milk, ground turmeric, ground ginger, coconut oil, black pepper, and sweetener. Whisk to combine and warm over medium heat. Heat until hot to the touch but not boiling, about 4 minutes whisking frequently.
Turn off the heat and taste to adjust the flavor. Add more sweetener or more turmeric and black pepper for a more spicy flavor.
Serve immediately dividing between two cups. Best when fresh, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated.

Sometimes when diverticulitis symptoms flare up, I like to go to a liquid diet for a day or two. Golden Milk is thick and rich and is a great substitute for a meal.
An Alternative to Golden Milk
If you try Golden Milk and decide you just don’t care for the flavor, turmeric and black pepper are available in capsule form. If you choose to use turmeric in capsule form, be sure it contains black pepper as well to help your body absorb it.
