This beautiful, light, protein-packed salad is delicious, filling, and can be made in less than 10 minutes.
Ahi tuna steak is one of my favorites for a quick, easy, healthy meal with almost no effort.
The tuna steak for this salad came from Aldi. I’m usually not a huge fan of frozen fish filets, but I’ve been pleased with the frozen fish at Aldi. A bag of 5 tuna steaks costs about $5 and they cook up wonderfully.
How to Cook Tuna Steak
Set the tuna steak out a couple of hours before you plan to cook them. Never thaw fish in the microwave. It’s too delicate. If you’re in a hurry to thaw fish, put it in a bowl of warm water plastic bag and all for about 15 minutes.
In a non-stick skillet put about a teaspoon of coconut oil and heat it on medium heat. Once the oil is hot place a tuna steak in the oil and let it sit and sear for about 2 minutes. Flavor the top side of the steak with lemon pepper and a little salt.
When two minutes is up, with a pair of tongs turn the tuna steak over to cook the other side. Season that side with lemon pepper and a little salt as well.
Cook no more than two minutes on each side. Tuna steak is supposed to be served rare. Cooking it beyond rare ruins the flavor and texture.
Assemble the Salad
To make a salad like this one, use fresh spring greens for the base. Assemble them on a pretty plate like this red Fiestaware plate. Doesn’t this red plate make the colors of the salad pop?
I love Fiestaware. It’s a rainbow in my kitchen cabinets and it reminds me of my Great-Grandma Irma. She had Fiestaware from back in the 1940s that I just loved as a kid. She also had Le Creuset cookware. The colors are so rich and beautiful…
Ok, back to the salad… 😊
Fresh radishes sliced thin, shredded parmesan cheese and fire-roasted sweet red peppers complement the tuna steak very well. On a cutting board, slice the tuna steak into thin strips along the grain of the steak. Place the tuna steak strips on top of the salad, then add dressing.
Use a Vinaigrette Dressing
A creamy dressing will be too heavy for this salad. Use your favorite vinaigrette dressing. A simple drizzle of avocado oil and red wine vinegar is wonderful with this salad.
