The lazy, hazy days of summer are in full bloom. Gardens are yielding their bounty. Herbs are begging to be picked and used. Lavender is being used for more than sachets. It is gaining in popularity in the kitchen. Not only is lavender fragrant, it is a delicious herb that pairs well with lemon. Start using lavender in your recipes by adding a new twist to an old favorite: Lemonade.
How to Make Lavender Lemonade
Infusing lemonade with lavender flavor is easy. Here’s how:
In a small saucepan, bring 2 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar just to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Remove the sugar water from the heat. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of lavender buds to an herb diffuser or tie up in a piece of cheesecloth. Place the herb diffuser in the hot sugar water and let it steep for about 3 hours.
Remove the herb diffuser from the sugar water.
Into a half-gallon sized pitcher, add the infused sugar water, 2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 4 cups of water. Stir well. Garnish with fresh lemon slices and lavender sprigs if you have them.
Time-Saving Method for Making Lavender Lemonade
If you don’t have time for making Lavender Lemonade from scratch, use a powdered lemonade mix. Then boil the amount of water needed according to the package directions to make the amount of lemonade you want.
Can Lavender Essential Oil Be Used to Make Lavender Lemonade?
According to the certified herbologists contributing to the Herbs & Essential Oils Ultimate Bundle, the answer is no. An essential oil is a highly concentrated form of the medicinal properties of a plant. Ingesting essential oils can cause liver damage. They recommend not ingesting essential oils at all.
My friend Marissa at Squirrels of a Feather did her own “cook-off” experiment making Lavender Lemon Mini-Tarts using both lavender buds and lavender essential oil for flavoring. The lavender essential oil created an overpowering medicinal lavender flavor that wasn’t desirable for cooking.
